15 radio/TV stations in 30 days… and I lived to tell about it
Several years ago, my wife and I were marketing a very popular product being sold exclusively through Direct Sales/Network Marketing. This product had gained some attention in the media because of its popularity and its unique qualities. We didn’t know anything about techniques fo getting free publicity at the time, but we both had the idea that we wanted to try to draw some attention to this product using Radio and Television.Â
My wife had previously worked in a State Government Office where she would send out Media Advisories (or Press Releases) on a regular basis. These advisories always took on the same basic one page structure and formatting and they were always faxed to the same contact people.Â
We decided to mimic these press releases as closely as possible to make sure our press release looked so similar and fit right in with the others (visually).
Sandy and I carefully constructed a headline, some sub-headlines, and about 5 paragraphs of very compelling information about our product. We tried to think about our product from a new reporter’s perspective and write the press release like an exciting news story. We concluded the press release with an offer to prepare interviews with product formulators and company executives, as well as scientific authorities on the product.Â
We offered to have samples available at each station at air-time and we also offered to have a number of product give-aways available at the station. When all was said and done, we really felt we had a compelling story.
We spent several days faxing these press releases to the newsrooms of approximately 100 radio and television stations in our state. Within just a few days, we had a call from one of the most popular contemporary music radio stations in Seattle. They scheduled an appointment for me to come up and talk about the product on the air.Â
I offered a list of FUN and INTERESTING ideas for the radio show to the morning DJs. They liked my ideas so much that they incorporated every single idea into the show and I was on the radio off and on for at least 3 solid hours during morning drive time. Several DJs in the studio were trying the product and commenting on it while we were on the air, and at the end of the show, I was able to give out my 800 number to the listening audience.
Not only did I have a fantastic time at the radio show, but when I got home, I checked my messaging service and I had at least 40-80 calls from people calling to order the product. It took me several days to get through the list of contacts, while working to set up additional media events.Â
Using this initial experience as a “demo” to leverage more interviews, I was able to receive invitations to 11 more radio stations and 3 televisions stations over the next month. I actually appeared on local evening news programs sitting next to the anchor people and talking about my product! In just 30 days of hard work on these stations, I produced tens of thousands of dollars in sales over several months and recruited over 100 new distributors almost immediately!!
Now remember, Sandy and I knew NOTHING about getting FREE PUBLICITY. We really felt like we were really lucky to have those experiences and really didn’t think about trying to repeat this process again until recently.Â
Since that time, I’ve read many books on the subject of Free Publicity and have discovered methods and strategies that could have helped me to get on literally hundreds of stations during this first campaign! Oh well, no use living in the past. At the present time, I’ve learned that Free Publicity has nothing to do with luck. It has everything to do with waiting for the right timing and then executing a solid plan of attack. Results can be consistent and predictable.

STEP ONE: Getting Ready for the Free Publicity EXPLOSION!!
Before launching a press release or sending media kits, its very important to PREPARE for MASSIVE success. Here are the steps for preparation:
Budget: Prepare a modest sum of money to carry you through all phases of your media campaign. Several hundred dollars will suffice on a smaller scale, several thousand on a large scale. Be prepared for expenses associated with mailings, copies, photos, videos, and other promotional materials.Â
Be prepared for travel and telecom expenses, and you might even take a few news directors to lunch. It doesn’t take much to run a free publicity campaign, but it does take a small budget. Many of my techniques are absolutely FREE, no cost. Some are break even, or you can even make money on the campaign, but you have to invest first, or get someone else to invest.
800 Number: It’s a great idea to get some kind of 800 number service that you can either forward to an existing business line with appropriate outgoing voicemail messages, or at least an 800 voice messaging service. Its best to have an 800 number system you can integrate with your website, your email, and your call center. Click here for suggestions on great 800# services.
Website: If you’re really going to make a big SPLASH with free publicity, you must have a website. And not just any website, your website must be a reflection of the image you want to portray to the world. You can also create a site specific to what you’re promoting on the radio. For instance, if I wanted to simply capture names of people interested in purchasing my book and related products, I would send them to a site like www.networkmarketingbook.com.  If you don’t have a big budget, you’ll have to get creative about how to come up with an impressive site. If you’re promoting your network marketing product, I would recommend finding the best replicating website your company or upline has to offer.
Here’s another website I’m using for my network marketing business www.123mvp.com. As I said, this is a replicated site so everyone in my downline can have their own copy of this to refer to media sources. It’s an impressive page.
Self Promotional Tools: Full Color Business Cards with your picture on them, large promotional photos of yourself, professional brochures, newsletter, multi-media presentation material on your product and business, all of these materials will be a part of a “press kit” that you will assemble later.
